Choosing the best kitchen layout for your home

Published: August 29th, 2019

Ah, the kitchen. The heart of the home and considered the most important rooms in a house. It’s where you cook meals for your family, a place to eat and also used for entertaining!

When building your new home, it is definitely important to really think about how you use your kitchen to work out the best layout for your family and lifestyle. Think about location, functionality and space!

The location of the kitchen is one of the most important factors to consider when designing the floorplan for your new home and it all comes down to your lifestyle!

If you love entertaining, then consider the location of your kitchen in close proximity to the alfresco and easy access to the living areas. Kitchens aren’t only used for cooking, they can be a hub of activity too! Not to mention the kitchen bench is a great place for a grazing platter 😉

If you have a big family (and endless mountains of washing), consider the kitchen next to the laundry, so you can do the washing whilst preparing your meals, making the housework super-efficient #winwin

There is no such thing as too much space! With sooo many items required in a kitchen – from small appliances, food items, utensils, crockery, cutlery… (the list goes on), you need to think about where you’ll store all of this! Luckily, we have some tips to help you plan for your perfect kitchen design.

Plenty of cupboards or drawers!

Ensure you design your kitchen with plenty of cupboard space that is easily accessible to store all of your plates, cutlery, pots and pans, bakeware, containers and utensils. Trust us, you’ll want as much storage as possible!

TIP: if you don’t have a large area to work with, make the most of the space with overhead cupboards!

Scullery or walk-in pantry

Do you ever wonder what to do with those pesky appliances? It can be annoying having to store these on your benchtop, so consider including a scullery in your new kitchen. You’ll have plenty of space to store your appliances that are out of sight and keep your kitchen looking spick and span!

Ever look at your current pantry that is bursting at the seams? We get it! These days it is becoming increasingly popular to include a walk-in pantry in your kitchen, so you’ll have endless space to store your pantry items! Just imagine how easy it will be finding everything! *scrolls through Pinterest to find pantry organisation inspo*

Plenty of bench space

Don’t forget to make sure you have plenty of space to prepare your food! Remember that a stove top and sink take up a decent amount of space, so make sure you think about the space you have to prepare your favourite. There’s nothing worse than having to chop up food in a tight space, am I right?!

Whether you spend extra time in the kitchen with a passion for cooking or love entertaining, there are various kitchen layouts to choose from that suit different lifestyles.

Gallery or Island Kitchen layouts are all about open plan living! The ultimate kitchen layout for those who love to entertain, offering the perfect space to socialise with your friends or family whilst preparing food. On the plus side, it seamlessly connects to the living areas.

U-Shaped Kitchens are an incredibly popular choice. With loads of bench space, plenty of storage the u-shape kitchen layout is perfect for those who love to cook! This layout also makes the most use out of a smaller space.
