Finding yourself overwhelmed with dozens of boxes in every room? Are you now wondering when you will be able to finally get everything done?
Even though it seems like all the hard work of building your new house is finally behind you, there are still several things you need to do before moving in to your brand new home.
Here are our 5 tips to help you with settling into your new home as quickly and easily as possible.
1. Pre-moving essentials
First and foremost, you need to take care of the basic stuff such as: changing your address with the post office; arranging for your old utilities to be cancelled and confirming that your new gas, electricity and water bills are set up in the new home; connecting your internet service; obtaining packing boxes and naming each one so that it’s easy to unpack; and finally, hiring a good moving company if required.
2. Create a plan for each room
Before you move in, it’s always good to decide how you want each room to function. Walk through the rooms and decide where you want your furniture to go. If you want everything to go as smoothly as possible, you will need to prepare before moving in.
3. Set aside the essentials
Organise a suitcase with everything you need for the first week like clothes and toiletries and also your documents. This isn’t as comforting as having everything in its usual place, but you’ll know where your necessities are and you won’t accidentally pack any of them. When all your other packing is complete, you can just zip up your suitcase and drive it over to your new home.
4. Tackle the big stuff first
Once everything is in the new house, start unpacking one room at a time – this will help you stay focused on the task at hand and complete it quickly. It is always easy to get overwhelmed when faced with several open boxes at once. If necessary, designate separate rooms to each member of the family or household so that the entire burden does not fall on one person. If you are moving by yourself or with one other person, then break your jobs down so you can get a little bit done each day. Before you know it you will have all of your items unpacked.
5. Spend a little time exploring the area
Take a drive or a walk around the neighbourhood to find the nearest grocery store, restaurants, bank, hospital and post office. Learning about what’s around you will help you feel more at home. And finally, get to know your new neighbours – they can keep an eye on your home when you’re away so introduce yourself to create a good impression.
